Throw a Faggot on the Fire

It’s been said that the squeaky wheel gets the oil. It doesn’t really matter if that wheel needs it or not, we just want to make it stop; we assume its broken and want to “fix it.” It seems that we’ve “fixed” this country so thoroughly that it no longer resembles what it was intended to be. Everything’s changed, and very little of it for the better. We live in a country where everyone should win and no one should lose, regardless of how little effort the would-be loser puts forth. We seem to believe that if it feels good we should be able to do it with no adverse consequences. Passing the blame and the brunt of the consequences of our stupid choices is commonplace, and in some cases facilitated through things like government-funded abortion. The sense of blind entitlement in our culture is nauseating, and it’s tearing the fabric of society apart as we each go our own way with no regard for the good of the whole. We reject anything that recalls responsibility and accountability – especially the things of God. We are burning our country to the ground one shallow, short-sighted, selfish decision at a time.

Recently, Phil Robertson from A&E’s Duck Dynasty addressed the issue of rampant sin in our country. By sin I mean self-centered living with little or no regard for God, or others. He was asked in an interview for GQ Magazine about his personal view of sex in America. In his answer he mentioned the destructive nature of a number of sinful lifestyles from drunkenness to illicit heterosexual sex, and yes, homosexuality. Of course the gay-rights activists were quick to rise up and now Mr. Robertson is losing his TV show over his personal views. I’m glad to see how little that seems to effect him. Yet, it demonstrates how far this country has fallen. The squeaky wheel gets the oil, or in this case the myopic, depraved, hate-driven, hyper-vocal minority gets pacified. In other words, it goes to show that the only people who really have the freedoms our Constitution affords all citizens are those who lobby and pay for them. So much for their “equality.” It’s a tragedy, and I pray that the majority will take a stand and take our country back before it’s too late.

“This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil” (John 3:19). And this is so true. We see it in the A&E debacle. Like Adam and Eve with their fig leaf undies, and as they hid from God among the trees, we too will either hide our sin and pretend it isn’t there, or call that which is evil good and right in an effort to change the rules. The guilty are so quick to attack any light that shines because they want to remain in darkness and cover the world in darkness too. People just look for reasons to be offended and take issue and figuratively (usually) beat people into submission. I hope the title of this article offended you! For the record, a faggot is a bundle of sticks. It always has been. Round about the 1920’s ‘faggot’ was a word used for cigarettes – not a huge leap. When it became anything more than that, I have no idea … and frankly, I don’t care. But someone’s going to read that title and have a full-blown hissy fit. To be clear, I do not advocate violent or hateful actions against any people group, period, without exception. That runs contrary to character of God who sends daily blessings even to the wicked (sun, rain, air, breath). Yet still, the needle on the martyr meter gets buried by over-sensitive, agenda-driven people trying to snuff out a Light they do not understand.

The assault on non-conformists has reached a all-time low. The agenda tells us all to “celebrate diversity,” and cries for “tolerance,” yet refuses to tolerate anyone who doesn’t toe their line and march to their cadence. It’s gone so far that we have the spokesperson for GLAAD telling us what Christians should and should not be like! I’d be surprised if this person has ever actually read the Bible, let alone taken the time to understand it and what it means to follow Jesus. It’s ridiculous. In an age where so much awareness is being raised over things like bullying, this assault on one man’s freedom and beliefs (and it’s not just this one man!) not only goes unchecked, but is actually supported by gutless laws, and mainstream networks like A&E.

For a long time, those little bracelets with “WWJD” on them were so popular. It was meant to make those who have surrendered their lives to Christ stop and think about what a Christian response would be to any given situation. What we need to keep in mind is that Jesus often spoke the hard truth. He called sin ‘sin,’ and he would levy some very harsh words against those leading people into darkness and away from God. There was at least one occasion where he flipped tables and drove people out of his Temple with a whip he made for that purpose. All this is to say, that those of us who belong to Jesus should be very intentional in our response to the degradation of our nation. We need to pray, foremost, and stand for truth and let the Light of Christ shine. We need to be willing to take the world’s persecution and hateful/fearful response in the full confidence that Jesus is right and the world is the liar. We can’t be afraid to rock the boat and step on toes when it comes to speaking the truth in love. “All men will hate you because of Me, but he who stands firm to the end will be saved” (read Matthew 10:17-22).

The souls of our fellowman are at stake. There is no “us” and “them.” There is just us, and we need to pull our head out of our orifice of choice and get active in living and speaking the truth we claim to believe. Nothing is more important, nor more essential.

I am inspired by Phil Robertson and his response to all this. I pray that God will continue to use him, and his amazing family to advance the Kingdom. I do not pray for safety or comfort, or even peace (Jesus said he already gave us his peace). The Christian life is not a playground. It’s a battlefield. I pray that God would deploy his people on the front lines and empower us all to exalt the name of Jesus and crash the gates of hell. It’s time to throw a faggot on the fire and stoke the flames of zeal in our hearts for God!
